This is a question that comes up a lot. What should I wear? And it is a very important question. For the most part wear what you normally would wear. The best way to do group family photos is to have all people dress similar. This doesn't mean all in the same outfit, unless that is the effect you want. You just do not want Uncle George in a suit and tie standing besides, Uncle Bill in shorts and a t-shirt. As far as formal or casual that is fully up to you.
Try to stay away from an extreme amount of white or black. These outfits have a tendency to loose detail, depending on the background. Earth tones (colors in nature) are the best to work with. Also try to stay away from large logos. When you wear a shirt with a large logo, you take the focus of the viewer off of you and onto the logo. You want to remain the focus of the viewer.
